Each year the Christmas story provides a message of hope to the world. That message isn’t heard or believed by many. That doesn’t dull the message which endlessly repeats the call to renew our hope and our imagination. Much of the world of 2016 has suffered from the blights of betrayal, mistrust, fear, conflict and deeds of cruelty. Many of us find our faith challenged and our trust in the basic goodness of humankind, diminished. The celebration of the Christmas feast is a reminder that in spite of the difficult days and human frailty that there is a place for goodness and hope. That in spite of everything God is at work in the heart of our beleaguered world. There is a reason for hope. There are people of charity and hospitality. God is present around us and in us and the yearly celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ is the annual reminder that God is still with us. May God grant us new vision and new hope and new courage during this season and in 2017.
